Jonathan Short

July 31st was the last day for submissions to our general knowledge contest entitled “My Cultural Bucharest–from Radio Orchestras to Contemporary Art”.
The competition focused on Bucharest, a European-class cultural center, with emphasis on symphonic music and contemporary art.

Allan Fenix wrote the following: “As a Dxer I love to get to know of other far away lands other than my own. Listening to broadcasts like Radio Romania International gives me an idea to the soul of that country. At home, we have a set of Encyclopaedia Americana where I always refer myself whenever I encounter topics to research further on.”

Next here is how Lukyari, from Pakistan, motivated his participation in the contest: “I am eager to get the knowledge about the culture of different countries; this point motivated me to participate in this competition. Through this competition I searched your answers on different sites and in this way I got more information. I am also fond of from childhood to participate different kind of competitions and to accept the challenges.”

RRI has granted 15 first prizes that went to the following RRI listeners and Internet users: J?rg-Clemens Hoffmann of Germany, Dominik Malecki of Poland, who wrote to the Romaian Service, Paolo Valente from Italy, Viktor Galitski of the Ukraine, Juan Carlos Buscaglia from Argentina, Nikolai Matveev from Russia, Elena Kurbanova of Turkmenistan, Abdel-Razaq Qasmi from Algeria, Belgrid Moad of Morroco, Martin Rogan of Great Britain, Ramon Rodriguez of the US, Jacques Giraud from France, Amady Faye of Senegal, Hammel Baba of Mauritania a listener of the French programs and Jonathan Short who listens to the Chinese language programs.

Here is what our friend Martin Rogan wrote to us: “I always like researching the topics of these contests and on this occasion I have made reference to a book called “Explore Romania” which was presented to me during a visit to RRI. I have also used a volume by Florin Andreescu entitled “Bucuresti” which I bought at the Parliament Palace. I even used a website which is most unusual for me.“

We also have 3 special prizes which we awarded to Tamara Ferrari from Italy, Mitul Kansal of India and Richard Chen from Trinidad Tobago, the last two being the friends of RRI’s English Service.

Mitul Kansal wrote to us a nice message from which we quote the following: “I would like to see RRI and meet its staff members in studio. I would like to visit the Bucharest because I think it has become a venue for hosting major international dialogues promoting the reconciliation of disputes between states and peoples. I believe Romania, a culture rich country with a colorful past and present is awaiting me in 2012 to experience a truly revitalizing vacation.”

Richard Chen also wrote us an interesting message: “My main reason for participating in another great listener’s contest of RRI is in the sporting maxim that the glory lies not in winning but in participating. And Romania is now like a second home to me having participated in many previous RRI contests on Romania I am ever eager to learn more and more and what more fascinating than the historic Romanian capital of Bucharest, known famously as the "Paris of the East" or the "Little Paris". It is said that Bucharest is a cosmopolitan city with a large range of attractions, for all preferences and all ages; the wonderful mix of architectural styles, cultural institutions, churches, cathedrals, architectural monuments, terraces, bistros and restaurants, the picturesque of the streets, the courtesy and kindness of its inhabitants; these all combined to give Bucharest a special and singular personality. Maybe I might touch down on Bucharest one day but at the moment I can see and feel this "Paris of the East " at the "gates of the Orient" thanks to Radio Romania International and the communications revolution thru the Internet and the Information Age of today.”

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the contest and submitted their answers.
And now, the big moment of the program: the winner of our grand prize, a 7-day stay in Bucharest at the Hotel Royal between September 23rd and 30th is …: ROBERT C. ACKX of the Netherlands and his wife, MARIA HELENA ACKX-BLOM. Congratulations, we’re looking forward to meeting you in Bucharest in a few weeks!

Prizes will be sent by snail mail. We kindly ask you to confirm receipt of the packages and their contents in a letter, fax or e-mail. Thank you again for participating in our contest devoted to Bucharest. We’d also like to extend our invitation to take part in future competitions that RRI intends to organize. We’re already working on our next, so get ready!
